Why biodiversity and ecosystems matter to the economy?
One of the findings of the “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB) initiative was that just one year’s worth of biodiversity loss now will end up costing the global economy more than €1 trillion. This staggering figure is about equal to the combined GDP of all ASEAN countries, and around five and a half times that of Thailand.
ECO-BEST is derived from the recognition that unless it can be demonstrated to make sound economic and financial sense to conserve biodiversity and ecosystems, households, businesses and governments will continue to underinvest in these valuable and yet threatened assets – and in many cases may be economically unable to do so.
